Do the rear seats on a 405 saloon fold, and how often does Xantia suspension break?

And are the Xant diesels of Pug origin?

Yes. The Xantia and Pug are closely related - ISTR the Xantia is just a hydro-thingie suspended version of the 405 floorpan.

Nope, but the arm rest thingy opens to fit long/thin items in.

It doesn't, unless it's neglected. Change the spheres every few years, change the fluid every few years.

It's a PSA unit. It's not a Citroen unit, it's not a Peugeot unit. It's the same engine in both.

Only if you cut through all the joints first.

Techically the Citroen BX is also the sister car to Pug's 405. Most in the motoring media put the 406 as being the Pug alternative to the Xantia but I think thats wrong cos the 405 looks more like the Xantia.

It's the usual PSA platform history.

The BX was launched in '84, and the pan later used for the 405 (launched '88). The Xant replaced the BX in '94, using an updated version of the pan. When the 406 replaced the 405 in '96, it used the same pan as the Xant. When the Xant was replaced by the C5, that brought in a new floorpan, which is now (finally) used by the 407.

My Xantia suspension has been fine for the 2 years I have owned it. I've had 3 Citroens now, a BX, a XM and now the Xantia. The only major problems I've had have been the trailing arm bearings in both the XM and BX, but bearing in mind I really hammered the suspension on those cars it's not surprising. I can change the trailing arms in about an hour a side working on the driveway so it's not difficult. The spheres went on the BX but again it's childs play to do the front ones and there have been several posts about doing the rear ones.

About as often as the suspension on any other make of car.

Change the spheres every three years and the fluid every 18 months using original LHM fluid.
