'94 Golf headlight lamp

Hi all,

I was going to replace my '94 Golf 1.8 CL (petrol) headlight lamp today, having picked up a replacement for a shade under 8 quid yesterday. Unlike the Mk IV its supposed to be straightforward with no need for bumper removal.

Well, I had a bit of difficulty with the wire clip that holds the lamp (until I tried pressing it down!) but then on removing the lamp I noticed that the original is much bigger than the replacement. The replacement lamp is probably about 2 inches long, with 2 spade connnectors, the original looks a lot bigger, and is a bit over 3 inches long, much wider and has 3 spade connectors.

It maybe that this is a new design that will fit in without any probs, but I thought I'd ask you guys before completely destroying the electrical system. :)

And the Haynes book says I should disconnect the negative battery terminal, which I did, but is it necessary?

Thanks for any advice.

you need to get the right bulb

You've got the wrong bulb. What bulb does the manual say?

Nah, that's for poofs. The way they make the connectors it's pretty near impossible to accidentally short somethig out.

I haven't found that yet, but the original bulb was:

H4 12v 60/55w E13 253

and the one they gave me was:

H7 12v 55w N103 201 01 E1 23P

I don't know if that tells you anything useful.

Well there you go, they've given you the wrong bulb. You want the one that fits what you've got i.e. one with both full and dip filaments, hence the three connectors.

It tells us everything.

You have the wrong bulb. H4 is probably the commonest headlamp bulb about. Any petrol station (well, almost any) will sell you one.

Thanks guys, sorted. They said the H7 one was for the same thing but later like '95 onwards. I'm not convinced myself.
