'96 Escort Engine severe Misfire/Judder

Hi,

A while ago i posted to this group about a my Ford Escort ('96, 1.6, ~100k miles) which seemed to be experiencing a severe misfire/juddering which would begin about 10 min after startup and last about 10-15min. If you could drive through this then the problem cleared and everything would be ok for the rest of the drive. However, recently the problem has been getting more severe despite changing the spark plugs, coil pack, HT leads and fuel filter and cam position sensor (error signals were detected from this sensor in a test on the ECU).

The only other possible causes i can think of (from searching google groups) are:

1) Incorrect signals from the MAF 2) Loss of fuel pump pressure due to a faulty fuel pump 3) Incorrect readings from the HEGO (O2) sensor) 4) Leaking exhaust manifold gasket drawing in air which is partially warm and confusing lambda sensor

I would be incredibly grateful if anyone could offer advice as to most likely cause and which to start investigating first.

Many thanks,

Damian

Are you using 5W-30 engine oil? These engines suffer from sticking valves if this oil isn't used.

Yes - I changed the oil myself to make sure it was 5W-30.

Since posting, i've also unplugged the MAF whilst the engine was idling erratically and it had no effect so i'm beginning to think that it's probably not the MAF.
