ABS sensor

On my mk4 golf 1.6 petrol 99 the ABS light has come on today.

I had the fault code read and it says 00285 "ABS wheel speed sensor front right"

I guess the sensory needs changing. I had a poke around it today and no wires were broken, connector was on tight.

Also ready a weak battery can cause it to come on mines, fine, also ABS fuses seems fine.

So I guess changing the sensor might be a safe bet.

Quick question it says front right is that front right when sitting in the car or standing infront of it :) ?

Sounds daft but I have no idea ... looks a simple job. Wheel off, power connector off, allen key bolt off, lots of wd40 and yank it out, failing that smack it out with a nail punch and hammer or such like fit new one.

Advice very welcomed.

Clean the connector first. It maybe just corrosion problems.

I know nothing about abs sensors... but I have a feeling they are simple magnetic sensors used in my industry - they note the passing of ridges cast in the metal of the wheel disc by the changes in the magnetic field. If so, metal scrapings stick to them and distort the reading, they get dirty etc etc or indeed the relative position of the sensor to the ridges changes due to wear or bearing failure.

So check if its clean and the wheel is rotating in true - ie it doesn't wobble in and out of 'focus' of the sensor.

These sorts of sensors are generally very reliable - more likely to be the above.

Left or right is from drivers viewpoint. Mike.

Yup. But...

Most likely problems with ABS sensors ime are fractured wires and general corrosion-related issues. They're often in thin ally casings, in a cast iron hub - electrolytic corrosion kills 'em nicely, and they're a bugger to get out.

Not wanting to be picky, but I can't understand why the question of left or right gets asked. I imagine that someone's right hand is still their right hand even when viewed by someone facing them. Is a car that different? What about an aeroplane, or a dog? If you are photographed waving your right hand does it become your left hand when viewed?

You're working on a car, where are you standing? Very often, slap bang in front of the engine bay looking aft.

I've had the wheel off to have a butchers, one of the wires was snapped in half and the sensor for some reason was cracked and broken ... I soldered the wire to see if it still worked it did, cleared fault code. But a niggly feeling said stop being tight as its probly going to give you more grief so I got a new sensor only £15 and I wished I hadn't bothered :)

It was an utter nightmare getting it out, in the end it took about 25 minutes with a hammer and a punch (nail type lol) and removed it in pieces. Then I had to modify the gsf sensor casing a bit to fit properly, I knew I should have gone to VW lol.

But alls well now new sensor in and no more ABS warning light, good thing to as my MOT is on Friday!

Thanks for all the quick advice everyone.

or from behind the car looking forward on many vehicles !! the convention is always from sitting in the drivers seat, since they always face forward.

Doesn't alter which side of the car is which. Stand where you like, the RHS is still RHS. Maybe this is why people's left legs get amputated when it should be their right.

I try to avoid Beetles, have a pathological aversion to wImps since owning one, and whilst I'd dearly love a Tatra it ain't happening in a hurry. Mind you, the R8 Gordini I was having a look at t'other day was a bit gorgeous.

Ferrari and Porsche spring to my mind before Beetles, Imps, Renault Dauphines, Skodas and the like, mind you I would really like to try a full blown Ariel Atom!!

Apart from the fact that I thought you wanted to stay anonymous after that £84m lottery win, you seem to be forgetting where my taste in vehicles lies.

Mind you, the Dino last night was rather nice, as was the 914 last week.

What was that on? My Ferrari is a Dino, a 308GT4.

This was a _proper_ Dino, a 246 - parked up in the yard of the local Ferrari specialists.
