Adding alarm to a Mondeo

We bought a used Mondeo LX last week (96 build, 97 shape)

It is ultra-basic, in that it has keyed central locking but no alarm or immobiliser. Also, it's an estate.

Has anyone got any advice about getting an alarm/immobiliser fitted to this model? Are there any decent after-market systems, or should I be looking for the Ford system. I am a little hesitant as there is alreday central locking in the car.

Advice appreciated, Dylan.

Errr, shouldn't one of that age have the standard alarm and immobiliser? I've got a 98 (is yours the new shape? You say 97, so I'm assuming it is), and it's definitely got an alarm/immobiliser. A friend has an N reg Fiesta with the standard Ford immobiliser!

FWIW, this Haynes (ha!) manual covers 1993 to 1999 (when it was bought), and it states that from 1993 _all_ Mondeos had alarm and immobiliser as standard.

Is there a red LED that flashes, probably next to the clock? If it flashes once every 3 seconds or so when the doors are locked after you get out, then you do have an alarm system. If it's on constantly, you have a problem with the system somewhere, so you need to get it checked out.

To test whether or not you have one, open and close the drivers door about

20 times in very quick succession. I found this out by accident. I'd greased the door hinges and door lock, and was making sure the grease was spread around. What happens is that each door when opened and closed (including bonnet & boot) will cause the alarm to beep.

What do you mean when you say it has "keyed central locking"? You put the key in the door & turn? If so, try this...

Put the key in the door lock, turn it to the open position, and then to the closed position, and then to in the middle. If the system doesn't have a fault, all the doors & boot will now be deadlocked. The indicators will double flash to tell you it's worked.

As far as adding an additional alarm... The built in immobiliser is quite good. If you don't have the keys, you're not going to be going anywhere very quickly. If you deadlock the doors, even smashing a window won't get you very far, because you'd have to climb in through the window hole. Everyone ignores car alarms anyway! The built in alarm will sound if someone where to break in and pop the bonnet. If I were you, I'd leave it as it is. Don't keep anything on display, keep the radio-front off the radio when you're not in the car, and you'll probably be OK.

This is interesting. I purchased a 1994 Mondeo, and cannot find the immobilizer...

Don't see one.

Hmmm... must test.

No indicators, so how do I know?

It's all transparent. You don't "see" anything. The ignition key has a "chip" (RFID transponder) in it. There's a pickup coil next to the ignition barrel which sends out a magnetic field, which communicates with the RFID transponder in the key. If the key is matched to the car, then the car will start.

If the key is not matched to the car, it won't start, and won't even turn over.

This is why pikeys have evolved from smashing a window & hotwiring, to stealing the keys, because cars are now "impossible"[0] to steal without the key.

Don't know where it would be on the Mk1 Mondeo TBH.

People _will_ think you've lost it while you're doing it :-)

Your car doesn't have indicators? Or you've tried it and it doesn't work? A friend had an M reg Mondeo, and his alarm system was faulty (the red LED was always lit, signifying a fault), and his deadlock system didn't work.

To test - wind the drivers window down, shut the door, put the key in, turn it to unlock, back to lock, back to central. The doors should lock. If you reach in, and the door opens using the door handle, it's not deadlocked.

[0] In principle, you could take an ECU & matched key from Car A, break into Car B, remove the ECU, swap them over, smash the steering lock cowl off, selotape the key & pickup coil together, and then hotwire it. This is unlikely to be a problem with a 1994 Mondeo :-)

earlier mondeos had the alarm system built in it was set by turning the key to locked position... i have a 1999 mondeo lx 1.8 (or at least the wife has)which has an alarm built in(the sounder(small horn) is in the nsr inside the boot behind the carpet type trim... which remote do you have if its the 3 button type then you need to press lock twice to deadlock the doors and set the alarm let me know either way and i'll try and find out 4 you Jeff

I can now verify, all UK built Mondeos _do_ have alarm, immobiliser & central locking.

The Mk1 is prone to problems. The above URL will help.

Sorry about the delay in replying. I have been offline for a while moving house.

My Mondeo definately has no alarm/immobiliser. It has central locking, but there is no light in the dash, and the unlock-lock thing does nothing.

I am 100% certain it is not there and never has been.

The car is not UK made. It is Belgian manufacture, made for the Australian market. I had a Mondeo in the UK, so I know how the alarm/immobiliser works in one, but my new one ain't got it. Which is why I wondered if there was one available.

(In answer to another question, it *is* the newer shape. But it still ain't got an alarm.)

Any ideas?
