Advice: Snow chains. (not for UK use)

I'm taking a trip to the Bavarian forests in late Jan. The site where we're going recommends snowchains as the snow can be a bit deep. Anyone here used snowchains before? If so, any recommendations as to type? Seen various styles on ebay. Cheers. JB

Yes, they're tedious, but do work. I think we just used the ones Biltema sell, which doesn't help you at all since they're a Scandinavian chain :-)

You should get some winter tyres on though, and carry some plastic mesh mats - they'll get you a long way, and the less you have to use chains the better.

Will have winter tyres anyway. Only need chains for the last 6-10kms and on the site itself. But they had _lots_ of snow last year. And we're camping. And the vehicle I'm riding is a trike.

Snow chains are a pain in the arse. Can take you 30 miserable minutes to fit, and much the same to remove. Wonderful on snow and ice, but as soon as you hit a bit of clear road you have to slow right down then take them off.

50 mph on snow and laugh at everyone else. Hit a cleared road and down to 10/20 mph and hold everyone up.

However, sometimes they are life savers. If your last mile to and from your home base doesn't get cleared they may be the only way you can make it in/out.

If you get some. practice a lot taking them on and off the spare. Learning under fire isn't a good plan.

Still got some stored away - moved away from the hills, climate change, yada yada...

Any traditional steel chain should do.

Cheers
