Alternator Issue & replacement tips

My 2008 mk2.5 Focus 1.6 TDCI (110) has had a whirr from the aux drive area for a few weeks. Typically only when cold. I initially suspected a worn adjuster / belt and planned on replacing once the weather got warmer.

Today the Whir got louder and then about 300yrds after setting of the alternator/battery light came on. There is the electrically burning / scalectrics sort of smell around the alternator.

There is little change in the battery volts when running / off.

This coupled with the whir and the smell has lead me to believe some sort of bearing/brush fault in the alternator. I plan on sourcing a recon alternator from my local reputable reconner.

I have changed alternators on Corsa Ds and combo Vans in the past.

Can anyone advise how dificult replacement is on this model and offer any tips?

It appears to have some sort of automatic adjuster for the belt tension, should this be replaced with the belt?

How do i take the tension off to remove/replace the belt?

Thanks
