Several engines will help you find the answer, not least google and yahoo, but searching for "bmw 3 series" on Wikipedia might give you the most comprehensive answer.

I'd start with Parkers, personally.

I understand these engines are renound for blowing turbos, what is the average cost for turbo replacement on this vehicle?

Soemtime in mid 02 saw the introdcution of the 163 engine (basically cars with the facelift lights and clear indicators - i think) previous to this it was 150bhp . Very early cars- before 2000 were 136bhp.

They do suffer turbo failure quite frequently, though not necessarily more likely on the 163.

The key seems to be more than regular oil changes and properly allowing the turbo to cool off for a few moments (10-30seconds depending on level of boost sustained) after a run before switching off.

It seems a combination of bearing failure through heat, and seal failure due to the turbo working at the edge of its envelope is the root of the problem.

You are looknig at a minimum of 750quid for the turbo from BMW, alittle less from a turbo specialist. That assumes no fragments have broken off and been injested into the engine.

Renault / Nissan have the same ongoing problem with their 1.9 and especially

2.2 dci engines.

Are the replacement turbos suffering the same fate or is the problem rectified on installing a new turbo.

Same problem as far as i am aware.

There may be some mileage in having a turbo specialist rebuild the old one with a 360 deg thrust ring and carbon seals but i've not heard of anyone doing it, or the outcome.

It's more a driver issue than an engine issue, so if the driver doesn't change how he or she behaves, then yes, same problem.

2001 was a changeover year for the 320d engines. If the car was built (not registered) before September, then it will be the older 136hp lump.

After that, it will be the 150hp engine. This is the one with the reputation for blowing it's turbos. Apparently a fix was developed late

2003/04, so models after then should be OK. If buying a 2001-2003 model car, I'd be tempted to make sure there's a watertight warranty with it, or at least consider taking one out yourself - the failure can be costly

- average fix from a BMW dealer being 2000-2500 quid, perhaps 800-1000 less from an independent.

The 163hp model didn't appear until the new shape (butt ugly IMO) version appeared last year.
