boot problem

Odd problem with the boot on my mark2 mondeo, 1998. The Boot has become extraordinary heavy, and wont stay up.... I presume one of the two pistons (?) use some kind of hydraulics to balance the weight and allow a smooth up and down action.

It is incredible just how heavy it is to lift, and keep it up....

Is there some kind of adjustment that can be done to the mechanism? Is it easy to replace these parts???

thanks

The gas struts'll be fooked. Should be easy enough to change over for good 'uns.

Is that what the whole part is called, 'gas struts', if i asked for a pair from a spare parts place, they will know what i mean?

Yes, but it may be cheaper if you get a pair from a scrapyard, especially if it is from a scrappy that allows you to dismantle them from the car yourself - That way, you can make sure they are OK.

The gas struts have failed. Although this is usually first noticed in cold weather.

You replace the struts - they usually just clip on. Some may have to be unbolted, though.

A decent motor factor should stock generic types - take one in as the spec is usually printed on the cover. But also price up the correct spares from Ford as they may not be anymore expensive.

IIRC they're about a tenner each (for a Volvo 340, not a Mondeo). Not worth going to a scrappy and looking round for working ones IMO.
