Brake noise

A month or two ago I had all 4 brakes replaced on my 1997 1.6 Escort. Now the rear (drum) brakes are making a rather pronounced rasping/ grating noise but it is only pronounced when cold. Could this just be due to a different material being using in the brakes to what I had before or should I be worried about this? It never happened before the brakes were replaced and the car appears to stopping ok.

Most likely the material. No asbestos any more. Some reckon the new stuff isn't as efficient. The grating sound is probably from the slight film of rust which forms overnight I was queuing for a multi storey car park the other day, - very steep approach ramp. Someone was riding their clutch and the pong was horrible,- like burning plastic fish, nothing like the old resin (which was not unpleasant, so long as it's not your own). DaveK.

Sounds like a rear cylinder leaking fluid to me...

Brake dust can build up in the drums and cause this noise. You need to take the drums off and have a look inside, and clean out the dust at the same time - although I wouldn't have expected much dust in only a couple of months .

i had the same problem with my Pug.Garage said it was loose crap, cleaned it out for small charge[God knows what KwikFit would have said and charged] three months later it was back.Garage said a good tip is to pull on the hand brake twenty yards before stopping the car when clear,I've done it and it clears the problem.I also bought a tin of brake spray cleaner from the pound shop that stops this, havn't tried it yet though but applying the rear brakes tip does work.
