Bravo braking issue - it's a bit weird....

1998 Fiat Bravo 1.8, disks at the front, drums at the rear. Disks/pads replaced around 6 months ago, drums/shoes still have plenty wear on.

Basically, the brakes don't seem to have that much "bite". Sure, they'll stop me quickly enough but you always wind up thinking you might need to apply a bit more pressure than you'd have originally thought. If I push the pedal really hard to the floor and then brake afterwards, the brakes seem to be much better for a few hundred yards then go back to their original feel. Any ideas what might cause this? Brake fluid was replaced a short while ago when I replaced a leaky slave cylinder, no leaks in the system.

Cheers

I would change fluid and rebleed the whole lot first.

Already been done when the slave cylinder was replaced, thought might as well do it at the same time - any more ideas?

If every thing else is in good order including self adjusters, non stuck pads etc.(check the flexis with someone standing on the pedal in case one is ballooning) and the fluid is new/bled, next would be replace the master cylinder, it sounds like the symptoms when a seal has gone internally.

As you probably have the time, set up a bit of wood to hold the brake pedal hard down and leave the car for as long as practical, like overnight at least and try the brakes again, sometimes this can work wonders on a system that just doesn't feel right.

had a similar thing on a Peugeot 205 few years back, turned out to be one of the flexi hoses, the rubber had collapsed making the inner diameter narrow. looked fine on the out side.

Sounds like air leaking into the servo, or, to put it another way, vacuum leaking out of the servo. Possibly the diaphragm has ruptured or there is an air leak somewhere in the piping.

Or they're crap pads (well too hard, fine for boy racers), try a set of OEM pads.
