Breather pipes

I am going to clean my idle control valve on my 2.0 16v R reg vectra, and I want to replace the breather pipe on top of the engine (it is soft, and sticky on the inside), and also to fit an oil trap so I don't have to do it all again. I went to Andrew Pages, who did not have anything I wanted, cos only vauxhall supply them, so I ended up walking out with some heater pipe to fit as my breather pipe. So...

1) is heater pipe OK for the breather pipe at the top of the engine.

2) Can I make a new idle control valve gasket from a paper gasket kit (or corn flakes packet for that matter)

3) If I get an oil trap, which breather pipe do I fit it to? The one I am replacing, or the half metal half rubber(?) one at the front coming from the bottom of the engine? Does it float in free space, or is there somewhere to fix it to.

if you are careful, you should not need a new washer. just DO NOT CREASE IT as it comes off. i used a very small flatblade razor (the modelling ones) it popped off a treat.

the major thing really is the two bolts, be very wary of burring the Allen key head when undoing get the key straight and don't use a 'ball' type Allen key. refit them using your fingers only ( to avoid crossthreading) do them up as far as u can with your fingers then about 1/4 turn with key.

as for the breather pipe, mine was soft but i found it 'recovered' ok once the gunge was out of it.

it seems to hold the heat in the sludge and make it go soft .

the breathers are quite easy to do, or replace later if it does not work i did not remove my downpipe just checked it was clear ( which it was)

not sure on the valve ( would be interested though if you have details)

1) No, the oil fumes will perish heater hose. 2) I do not know. 3) The oil separator goes in the breather pipe at the front of the engine and costs about £8 from a Vauxhall dealer. It does float in free space (on an Ecotec Omega).
