Burbling water sound when engine revs on Astra LS estate + lumpy engine

Hi,

Looking for some advice from the experts please.

We have several odd things happening on our V reg Astra Estate 1.6 LS

8V.

1) Engine failed to start a few times today. Normally starts on the button. Starter motor spins but engine doesn't fire

2) When it did start it ran very lumpily.Could feel the vibration. 3) When we rev the engine I can hear water schooshing and burbling, also heard this last week when I turned the steering wheel.

I filled the PAS fluid up 3 days ago as it was a little low. Since then we have not lost any and the level has remained stable.

Haven't has a chance to get underneath and see what is happeing around the PAS system. But the lumpy engine and failure to start has me puzzled. I know I haven't given many details but was wondering if the above symptoms could be linked?

thanks for your help, appreciated.

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Heds, managed to produce the following words of wisdom

I'd guess at the head gasket having gone. The "schlooshing" noise will have been because of low water (you'll have been listening to the sound of a half empty heater).

I think you may be right. Just been out to check and the coolant was a little low. Engine sounds very rough now and I think there is white smoke from the exhaust. Oh good.

I take it would be best to get this taken on a trailor to the garage rather than driving.

Trust the wife to have the raido up so loud she couldn't tell what is going on.

thanks for your advice.

Mmh frothy Cappuccino oil, def the gasket.

Great start to the Christmas season.

Fill up the coolant to the max level and run the car with the cap off to the garage. If it's a fair distance, take a few litres of water with you and stop every few miles and check the level. Keep an eye on the temp gauge and you'll be fine.

Depends on how much water is in the oil. I know someone who drove three miles on a blown head gasket (Mk1 Astra)and it wrecked the big end bearings when it dumped too much water into the bottom of the sump. He then left it on the drive for a month and the small end bearings seized up with rust :-)

It doesn't sound like the OP's case is that bad, but if he can arrange a tow I'd do that rather than drive it.

The other half decided to drive it despite me saying not to. She really doesn't listen to a word I say about that car hence the state it is in now.

Garage have it and say it will be around =A3700 to skim the head and fix.

Unfortunately I will have to pay for this.

thanks for all your advice.

It came to =A3660 for:

Head Gasket + sundries Skim New Cam belt Water pump Thermostat The usual bits and pieces

+Use of a loan car while it was being repaired.

Is this still too much? What should I have paid, bearing in mind that several people suggested taking it to Mick round the corner who does it for blah and Bob over there who does it for blah blah, but we did that a few years ago and it ended up costing more than we saved. I at least trust the garage who did the repair. They always let me use their press for free and do an ecu diag for nowt.

Willing to change garage if they are too pricey though. Always open to suggestions.

thanks,
