Cambelt

Been hearing this rattling noise from the engine bay and had a look and listened for a bit it comes from around the bottom left when facing the open bonet. Thought it might just be the rubber band thing that spins around bolt but that was fine so said the mechanic who checked it said.

Then he said it must be the cambelt and tensioners and that they would need replacing. Which is under the big plastic type engine protector thing that vw have on some of there engines. But he seemed positive.

The noise is still there after the car has been run for about 15 odd minutes after it reaches engine temp, but it is harder to hear as it has slowed down.

But now I'm wondering what to do should I have the cambelt sorted for peace of mind as I heard if its snaps while your driving it you've pretty much got an even bigger problem.

I left with the garages details and took the car home and came straight on to here to ask.

He couldn't give me a price on the work as his boss wasn't there. He said it would be half a days work.

So I was wondering what this kind of work would cost ? just so I know I'm not being taken for a mug.

Cheers

You know, it would help others to help you by giving us some simple details such as...... what car it is....... what size engine...... how many miles has it done.....

The milage is just under 32k its a vw golf 1.6 2001

I've only had the vehicle for a month since buying it. I have 6 months warranty its on ot those ones where you call the company and they find a garage near you to do the work or first take a look. I hope the cambelt is included in it.

Sorry ... Been a bit dazzled by the number of things gone wrong with the car. First it was the window regulator clips broke sending the windows crashing into the door ... basically had plastic clips and needed metal ones, etc and a few other nightmarish problems.

The car is a vw golf 1.6s 2001 has just under 32k on it.

If you need any other info let me know will be happy to post it.

Cheers

the car is 5 years old, if its the original cam belt then it needs changing(dunno wot the interval is tho) servicable items ar'nt covered but it is making a noise so then it "should" be covered

if not then the garage should do it as a goodwill gesture

Sadly, a very common Golf fault.

Cambelts are service items. They're not included.

179quid for new window kit, as plastic kit not available on own. so a nice 2x2 length of wood held it up lol.

Ok by the time I got home it was too late to call them I will first thing tommorow morning.

Basically ran the for a few miles today once I was at temperature I couldn't hear anything so I stoped opened the bonet and I could hear it a little less the sound was fainter but still there. So when I got it home left it for a while then started it again just out of curiosity and there is was again the rattly ker-chunking sound. I read the guarantee bookliet and says nothing about the cambelt being excluded lists alot of things that are excluded and whats included. The whats included part is very vague though, the company is called car care plan. There is one line that says on the exclusions page I just saw "any parts which are replaced as part of normal servicing requirements" hmmmm

As I was out driving it I saw a garage and stoped and asked for some advice he had look took the drive belt off I believe it called, checked it for wear and said they sometimes come loose and flap a bit making a noise, but the belt was in good condition and he said he doesn't do warranty work its too much hassle so said fair enough. He said to carry on driving it cars make odd noises sometimes and they disappear after a while once it warms up and the oil gets pumping. He said the car was perfectly safe to drive. But I've read bits and bobs on the net about if the cambelt fails whilst your driving its a whole new bigger problem so I'll not drive it anywhere till I find a place to do the work.

well I guess I'll call up in the morning and see what they can do ... if the gurantee is not worth the paper it is printed on then I'll have to pay up myself. I've been a bit unlucky only had the car since start of January.

Thanks for all the help. :-)

To be honest with you, these extra warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on. The salesman will tell you it covers absolutely everything until you come to make a claim that is!!

Yeh But No But

Thats the feeliong I'm getting. When I bought the car they "give you" 6 months guarentee but for an addition £100 they can extend it to 12 months. Probably not even be covered and they'll probably frown on the extra grief (the garage that is). But I'd be an idiot not to use it. If its a no go then as I'm pretty much expecting it to go I'll pay in good old fashioned cash. Seems the best paper people understand.

See how it goes tommorow.

Will keep you posted.

Update: Taken the car to the garage this morning. The mechanic had a look. Said it sounds as if the bearing in the alternator has broken but he said he cant say for sure untill they strip it down. If thats not it then they said the cambelt and tensioners but unlikely at such low mileage. The reason he said that it gets quieter when the engines at temperature is the bearing expands so has less room to knock against anything. So when its cold it smaller and has a bit more room to knock around. In his words. But he said he didnt want to play guess the problem so said to book it in to be diagnosed. As for my guarantee the boss frowned on it ... I gather as its more hassle for them but was wliling to do the nescesary calling up of care care plan once they had found the problem. So thats fair enough. If the part isn't covered by the care plan then I don't know how much it will cost to sort out, I asked but he wasn't sure of the part price so I stoped pestering him. Problem was they are backed up with cars and cant get to mine till saturday, so he said realistically I should have it back by monday or tueasday depending on the work and availability of the part.

He did say its safe to drive if it does loose all power though then it the alternator.

I'm pretty hesistant to drive it untill its fixed so I think its best left parked.

So just a case of wait and see till they strip it down and look.

It'll cost around the £250 mark.

Very unlikely. Alternators have 'ball' bearings which don't react to temperature. When they're broken they stay broken.
