Cavalier air con - evaporator change?

Can the internal evaporator matrix be changed without removing the dash?

if the dash must come out:

i) How do I disable the air bag ii) Will there be enough left to drive the car to an air con dealer for a check/regas or will somthing vital be missing! iii) any other tips

You do not have to remove the dash to get the evaporator out. It is removed through the glovebox aperature, and requires a hole to be cut into the side of the heater box to remove it. A replacement plastic cover is supplied with the new matrix, I believe.

I have never done this job on a Cav before, but I have on other Vx models. From that experience, I can state that the more room you make yourself, the better. You don't specifically have to disable the airbag, but disconnect the battery and leave for 1 minute before disturbing any part of the airbag system.

What is the reason for replacing the evaporator, as I have never known one to need to be changed on a Cav before?

My aircon went down ten days after a regas. No dye present anywhere visible. Yesterday the car passed pressure/vacum checks ( 1.5 hours on each! ) and the only 2 possible ideas the engineer had were either a very small hole somewhere, or the evaporator leaking where he can't see it. His "sniffer" went wild as soon as he put it near the inside of the car, but more so than he would have expected he says. So, maybe an evaporator, maybe not - open to ideas!
