Cental Locking Problem?

I have a 1.8 Escort LX TDI of 1997 vintage, and the central locking has just started playing up.If you turn the key to lock the doors you can hear it lock the doors and then unlock them leaving the car unlocked.Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks Simmo.

This happened on my Escort. One of the central locking motors is jammed and needs replacing. My local Ford dealership charged around 40 to replace it, and to be honest it's probably worth paying as it will take you nearly an hour just to disasemble and reassemble the door.

What? You lock the central locking with a key - why don't you just press a button on the key fob - or even better, just walk away from the car with the 'key' in your pocket! :-)

Old Escorts and buttons on Key fobs didn't happen.

I've no idea about how Escort central locking, but the central locking on my car started playing up (it's an aftermarket kit) the other day, and I took the central locking circuit out and stuck it in the airing cupboard and it worked again. I assume the relays were playing up because it's a bit damp in my car at the minute. It had similar symptoms to one of the solenoids being jammed, but if I held the handle in to lock the door it wouldn't keep trying to unlock itself.

My Cav (95) was playing up like this today too. Lock it - yes terribly old fashioned with a key, and it'd lock, unlock several times before staying open.

I stripped out all the drivers door only to find no fault - then had the bright idea of disconnecting the loom at the passenger door where it enters from the wing - hey presto system works minus passenger door obviously, so fault is in passenger door.

So strip this out, WD40 and "cycle" all plugs a few times - problem solved.

Rebuild and wrap - total time 1 hr 30

And its a '97? My 1993, second to base model 405 has remote central :) In fact, all 405's from 1993 onwards, and most before did :)
