Changing Timing belt based on Distance or Time

Hi

I have an 2001 accord (2.0i VTEC) which has done 22K miles. The Service Book says the timing belt should be changed every 5-6 years (i believe) or 70K miles. Strictly speaking I ought to change next year but was wondering considering based on my mileage whether it really is necessary.

How important is *age* for a timing belt or is *use* the real important thing to look at...

Cheers Hiro

I would be happy to leave one that has done so little mileage, perhaps as long as 10 years or 40 k miles.

BUT there are no guarantees, if you want to be really safe then get it done in the next year or so, a failure on an engine like that will be catastrophic.

I personally wouldn't leave it more than five years. But that's just me.

My view would be that it's just as important, as rubber gets brittle with age. As usual, it's cheap insurance against failure. Though if I was 100% sure that it was a non-interference design of engine then I might happily leave it a fair bit longer. Even so, it'd still be hassle if it was to go.
