choosing optional extras and factory production runs

when choosing optional extras and internal trim colors, would choosing a weird combination delay your cars production and delivery?

are cars produced and painted red ones first, then blue etc? or are they just made on the assembly line as the orders come in with the robots changing colors and tools as required? is it the same with both UK and Japanese manufacturers?

thx

I think it varies. I have heard that with the Japanese manufacturers you specify your desired Toyota, they pull a lever and 5 minutes later one pops out. Rover on the other hand used to be more proactive and would make several thousand cars in advance, leaving them parked in a wet field outside Cowley in case anyone ever wanted to buy one. Occasionally they'd bring them back in again to paint over the rust^H^H^H^H give them "bitonal"s.

beerismygas ( snipped-for-privacy@yahoo.com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Cars'll go down the line in no particular order - colour, spec, RHD/LHD - but the importers/dealer chain will likely have stock of common colour/specs.

If you want some unusual combination of options plus an odd colour then it'll be a factory order, with the delay inherent in that.

It's often better to deliberately pick some minor and cheap build to order option so that you know your 'new' car hasn't been standing around in a field for 6 months or more.
