Citroen AX alternator

A strange think I have with my citroen AX alternator. I can start the car and everything seems to be working but if I switch on the headlights for example the light on the dash is a bit dim and the headlights are not too bright. I therefore think my alternator is not charging the battery.

However if I give the engine a good rev. The alternator must kick in and everything brightens up.

Why would the alternator start doing this? Warn brushes or something? Is it likely to quit on me in the near future so I should think of replacing it?

Either worn brushes or the IND bulb in the dash has blown. Some alternators will self-excite if spun fast enough with the bulb blown.

Otherwise get ready for a new / recon one.

My AX GT used to have candle effect head lamps due to a faulty voltage regulator on the alternator. If you have Lucas service centre nearby remove the alternator and they will test it on the bench for you and tell you what parts you need; be it a new alternator or new bushes (if cost of replacement is worthwhile of course).
