Lissen! I shall say zis only once. My lad's 1991 Rover 827 automatic, starter motor gave trouble. Had it reconditioned and it then needed a whack with a hammer to make it work. Was about to take it back to the reconditioners, but his man charges a tenner to take it off and put it back. Last week he tells me the rear brakes are grating so he takes it to Kwik Fit. They want £170 to replace the discs and pads so he needs time to think about it, but the car won't start(again). In frustration he calls the local scrap man (sorry 'end of life' recovery agent). If you drive it to the yard you get fifty quid. If they have to come for it- hard luck. The scrap man arrives, we push the Rover out of Kwik Fit onto the road and line it up with the truck. Wonder if it will start- yes it does and gets driven smoothly onto the truck. No fifty quid though. Old cars ain't worth a carrot. Some new cars are only five or six thousand. DaveK.

I know how you feel. It's relative innit? My neighbour's got himself a brand new Audi something or other-top of the range. It's about his fifth new car in four years. I still think my 2000 Xantia is quite new. DaveK.

Anything with letters at the front end of the plate is new to me. (cue Yorkshire man story)

My family by 5 year old cars and keep em till they are beyond economic repair. Bets buy so far. A Yugo 45 Van. Bought for £75 in 1992 ( I believe) . Scrapped last year when it just died with 185k on the clock.

Not entirely sure what that's got to do with the engine having had a cam-belt snap, bending several valves.

No thanks, the Xantia's running fine.

At the end of the mass production line cars cost in materials, labour and processing about £5 to £6 per Kg. Whatever you pay above that for the new car is all profit split between the dealer and maker. Some makes get 100% over the odds just for the badge.

IMHO A bit over-priced for something that doesn't even run, though if you put it on eBay you might get more because it has 9mths MOT. I sold my '94 Rover 418SLDT for £275 with only a month MOT and a weeks tax - but at least it ran fine and they could drive it home without worries, whereas your's will need towing or trailering which is likely to put many off...

Whether it's over-priced depends largely on where it's advertised. For example, from the Ad-Mag I'd not expect non-runners to fetch more than about fifty quid unless they're something out of the ordinary or newish. Indeed, I've had some real bargain 'non-runner' or 'spares/repair' bangers for about that much and it's one of the first places I look if I need more than one or two spares for my car (cheaper to buy a complete non-runner, damaged or MOT failure than several spares from the scrapyard; and I get money back when I tow the carcass there!).

Of course, for selling I wouldn't put it back in the free ads, I'd put it on eBay where even (relatively) worthless old junk can still fetch a good price. My old diesel Rover got put on for £75 start (spares or repair, 1 month MOT, 2 weeks tax) with a buy-it-now of £150... it eventually sold for nearly double that!!! My dad wanted to drive his Cavalier to the scrapyard and get £20 just to be rid of it, but it sold on eBay for over £200 with only a short MOT and no tax. Mind you, it was in good enough condition that I was considering giving him fifty for it if it didn't sell and I'd get it sorted for the MOT...

I know someone who wanted one, but they wanted a very tidy one...
