Cleaning EGR Valve...

Hi

Vauxhall Combo 1.6 Petrol/LPG.

The old EGR problem again, R.E. my old posting, I've had the new exhaust fitted and the MIL light is back on following resetting. Reading the codes by pressing brake & Throttle and putting the ignition on indicates 0400 which is one of many codes for the dreaded EGR faults.

Symptoms indicate that the EGR is doing weird things too, so, before i dashed out and bought a new one i thought that id give it a clean, so i whipped it off and expected to find lots of gubbins that i could clean.

But i could only find one hole underneath, and one that was seemingly closed - presumably the valve bit!

Gentle prodding pulling and probing couldn't persuade the valve to open so I gave the flange and the open hole a squirt and wash with some carb cleaner and whacked it back on, unsurprisingly it is still malfunctioning.

So before i trouble autovaux for a new Valve am i missing something? I couldn't find any non-destructive ways of dismantling the thing. Has anyone else had any success?

Thanks Again

Tom

P.S. This Engine uses the double electrode spark plugs, which a bloke in the factors was telling me have been known to drop the centre electrode into the cylinder causing lots of excitement, he advised caution and traditional single electrode plugs as "if the centre falls out of them, thas bent electrode with catch it"

Any comments?

I have never known the multi side electrode plugs to fall apart. It would only be likely if they are dropped and damaged, or maybe if they are left in too long or the engine runs weak and overheats them, so if servicing is normal then forget that.

the egr can suffer from excess flow when the valve is stuck open, but that is usually obvious. A reading from a tech 2 would tell you the exact egr fault. on some engines you can buy a genuine vauxhall blanking kit and have the ecu reprogrammed so that the egr is no longer used.

A fault code does not always show which part is faulty, it indicates what could be a number of faults. I had a fault code which took a main dealer 3 days to fix, they had everything apart from the turbo, exhaust and intercooler. It turned out to be the MAF sensor. It wasn't registering how much air was flowing, so injecting too much fuel - the emission sensor was reporting this as a fault. It pointed at the EGR valve at first. It took a proper mechanic, not a fault code reader to diagnose and repair it with a £200 part.

You're wasting your time.

You will kick yourself when you find it isn't the fault.

Do you know about the sort of pressures in a cylinder as your friend doesn't!

don't replace parts that don't need to be.

Well other symptoms include:-

Loud clicking noises coming from the EGR (and not doing when it is unplugged) when the engine is revved / switched off.

What can best be described as lurching when getting lightly back on the throttle - especially when cold.

The fact that it has seemingly never been changed and is on 140k and searching lends me to belive that is a very good life for one of these "service parts".

Aye common thing that is. If worst comes to the worst i can either sell the part to my friendly mechanic friend, or stick it on ebay. Luckely its only £40. But following investigation of the symptoms I'm 99% sure it's that.

Aye thought as much, still i'll rip it apart when the new one comes to satisfy my curiosity.

I dunno but i put the propper double electrode parts in, as recommended by the dealer, handbook and NGK/factors.

Probably better than normal, it gets plugs filters and oils every 8k ish.

One of the old plugs i took out looked very different to the rest it seemingly had a crack in the ceramic about 10mm up from the hex piece and was charred/brown above the hex and below the cracked line. I've only ever changed spark plugs twice before on this van (usually have diesels) and never noticed this before.

Thanks for that info, might be worth looking into as the van is LPG emissions arn't really an issue.

Cheers

EGR Arrived, replaced, fault and symptoms cured :-)

Cheers All,

Wasn't worth messing with.

Is there any market on Ebay for broken EGRs?
