Clio Clutch Cable

Hi Folks A friend called me on Friday to say his clutch cable had snapped as he pulled off his driveway and asked if I could fit a new one for him. Having only ever fitted a clutch cable to an old Escort I said "Yeah, no problem!" So I got the cable on Saturday and went round there on Sunday to fit it. What a mare!! How the hell are you supposed to get to the point where the cable passes through the firewall? When we pulled the old one out it left the plastic bush in the firewall hole and trying to get it out is near impossible from inside the car and from the engine bay it is covered in a heat shield type material and surround by the brake lines and the master cylinder gubbins. So, has anyone ever done a clutch cable on a Clio? It's a K reg 1.2 litre model. If so, I'd love to know how the hell you do it! Many thanks Gareth
