Clio Electric Window

Can anyone offer any ideas why the driver's side window will suddenly lower itself in stages till fully open? Clicking of relays from under the dashboard seem to accompany this and the clicks continue after the window is fully open. At other times the down action of the switch does not work at all and when the window is in auto-lowering mode the up button will be over-ridden when you try to close the window.

Since the weather is turning worse I'd like to fix this!

sounds suspiciously like there's a problem with the wiring to the switch!

The message from "Pete M" contains these words:

Or water in the switch. I'd check the rubber bit where the wiring goes through the door first.

Something seems to be energising the relay without your intervention. Is it possible that there's a loose wire roaming around near the relay terminals? And/or maybe the relay is faulty and jerks into life by itself. I don't know whether they are prone to this though.

Sounds like a problem with the wiring or water in the system. Unless you know how to take your car apart and are competant with electrics, it's probably best to have a qualified person look at it.

Really, really does sound like the switch itself has failed, or the wiring to the switch (or relay box), if you can prise the switch out (dunno where they are on a Clio) it should be apparent where the problem lies.

What would be harder to diagnose is if the switch and relay are fine, and a core from the cable loom has rubbed / stripped and snapped against part of the chassis (not working at all = broken wire, "auto" mode = bit of that wire shorting to ground).

My money's on the switch, since this could explain a single point of failure resulting in all of the observed problems.

Good luck

I owned a K reg Clio 1.9 diesel and had similar prob's with the electric windows, and found that a periodic squirt with a switch cleaner cured the problem. You need to squirt using the plastic tube supplied with the tin and directed down the small gap between the switch body and the the switch rocker itself, then rapidly switch / rock the switch. I had to do this every year or so. I think the problem was due to damp, dirt and oxidization. I hope this helps and I got the switch cleaner from a company called CPC, cost about £1.00.

Maplins easier for most people :-) Although CPC's normally cheaper.
