Clunk when braking turns out to...

be the pads in the front drivers discs not seated properly.

Was driving me nuts, I checked the wishbone, tie rod and ends, rear engine mount, gear linkages, etc etc and turns out to be the pads in the carriers not seated properly.

The fault was when you reverse brake, CLUNK. But if you reverse, slip into 1st gear power and go no clunk ?

So everytime the brake is touched when reversing you get the clunk. Stripper out the front pads and seated them properly and no more clunk.

Not sure how this happened as I did the front pads and discs my self (mk4 golf), veyr simple, not my first time either. Glad its sorted as was driving me nuts!!

My Mk4 Golf has some pretty major clips attached to the pads, but they are different on the outside and inside (outside has a bigger clip). On my previous set of pads for it (can't remember the make), all the clips were the same size and the they squealed from the day I fitted them until the day they were replaced, no matter what I did. My recently installed Ferodo pads with the proper clips have been super silent.

I suspect it was the ATE pads I fitted. I did notice the clips on the piston side and oposite site were not as solid feeling (more flex imo) thank the OEM one I hfitte previously.

As for pads, I think I shall stick with OEM so no more headaches or clunks :)

Thats said I have used ATE, pagid pads and never had a problem before. But the OEM ones are not much more and I only got the pads at GSF car parts as I was buying discs aswell which the dealer charge a bit more for.

Although I think having used pagid pads for years and never had one problem with them I think I might go back to them, only reason I went for the ATE ones was that pagid were out of stock and I was all gung ho iun doing the pads that weekend :-s lol.
