Coolant leak

Hi,

I have a slow intermittent cooling leak on a Cav 1.7TD (isuzu). Sometimes there's a slow drip of coolant from the bottom of the engine near the crankshaft pully. I suspect its probably the water pump but can't actually see any leakage from the pump (although there's some oil/gunge which could be masking it) I'm fairly sure its not the connection from rad pipe to block. Is there anywhere else it could possibly be leaking from e.g. a core plug or something hidden under the cambelt cover? Replacement of the pump looks to be straightforward, yes?

Thanks

Jim

Pump problems are common, there are two types, very easy to change. Stick your fingers in behind the pulley (not running), any wetness is a leak.

I don't think there are any core plugs at that end, but of course there is the head gasket !

water

hidden

I did try that quickly, but couldn't really tell.

Good point its possible that it could be leaking from there, although the intermittent nature suggests the pump to me. It also looks like the leak does start below the level of the water pump - clean and dry above (which I think is below the head gasket?) however I can't see what happening behind the cambelt cover.

I think I'm going to have to get under there for a decent look and clean the oily gunge off to find out for certain, although the cold weather doesn't inspire me to do so.

Are these engines prone to blowing head gaskets? It did run a bit hot briefly on a couple of occasions (still a bit out of the red) when the fan switch failed - I'm sure it didn't actually boil.

Cheers
