Corsa 1.5td noisy engine update number 2!

Hi

The rough story so far:- bought 1.5td and found someone had put a noisy

1.7td engine in. Replaced cylinder head- no difference. Mechanic noticed that the fuel pump and injectors were of the 1.5td ilk but this was after he replaced the head! Took to another garage and replaced 1.7td engine with a nova 1.5td engine which is now ready to go in after much swapping round of bits.

The mechanics said that wrong fuel pump and injectors would cause the noise and loss of power as it would send the timing out.I'm a bit sceptical as there's not much difference between the 2 pumps. Any opinions?

I'm now left with a 1.7td lump. Looking at autotrader pages they never did a 1.7td engine for the Corsa!! So that means either it's a straight

1.7 diesel and someone has put a turbo on it (which apparently is possible with the help of a drill) or it has been taken from another car. The engine number is 310434, does this mean anything to anybody I've spent over a day phoning vauxhall and they can't identify from the engine number!!

Also, does anyone know if the difference between a straight 1.7 diesel and a 1.7td engine is in the block or the cylinder head or is it both??(obviously aside from egr valve etc, just the stripped down engine)

Thanks for any help

Is it possible to ask the previous owner where he got the engine from? If he says "A 1976 Ford Transit" you can then curse him all you like :)

Alot of injection pumps look very similar. It is mainly the internals of them that vary (different pump parts, valves and calibration). The wrong pump could certainly cause excess noise and lack of power.

That's the engine serial number. There should be another number which is the engine code (possible options are 17D, 17DT, X17DT, 17DR, X17DTL), which will tell you what the engine actually is.

There's normally differences. Uprated pistons, piston cooling jets, bigger valves, different compression ratios....the list is long of possible differences.

Didn't they do a 1.7TD for a Cav and Astra/Astra van? But that was the Vx/GM engine... My 1.7D corsa has a engine of Izusu parentage...

Doh today I deleted a pic of my engine bay...

Grr

incidentally if is is the Izusu engine, dont suppsoe you would consider selling the head...

But then again if it has been savaged...

They did do a TD version of the GM engine. Seen many a head gasket done on them.

Most (perhaps all) are low blow units without intercooler, and like the previous NA incarnation abit of an abomination..!

Thanks for the replies

Tom, I would consider it though was planning to use it on another project at some stage. I bought the head from Allvox, Alfreton and phoned them for advice after we realised the incorrect pump was fitted. Whilst Chris, the engine 'expert'(yes, allvox does have one I did bypass the stooges)said that the pump could probably be cause of noise, he did not say that the head would probably be savaged because the timing was consequently out....and he was certainly in a good position to say that!!!He was willing to swap pumps for a 1.7 and injectors- it would have been easier to say, "Well- you've knackered the head now!!"

I ran it with the head on for about 250 miles, starts very well then after 10 secs starts to struggle and blow out a lot of smoke. There was no water loss over that 250 miles that I did and also no bubbles (except occasional tiny one) in the expansion tank at 90 degrees- normal running temp, the car also held at 90 degrees throughout.

There was an oil leak from the rocker cover as there was on the previous head too, I don't know if some kind of over pressure from timing being out would cause the oil to find its weakest point??? If still interested - snipped-for-privacy@lineone.net

Thanks again for the help guys, when i get the engine back I'll look for the code.
