Corsa advice - overheating ??water pump??

Being the lazy ar$e that I am, I've just had a local garage (with a good reputation!) do the coolant change & flush on my '98 corsa (1.4 8v). Since getting it back the temperature guage has been all over the place:

From cold: after a 2 mile run at 50mph the indicated temperature was about

100*C. Sitting at traffic lights for 30 seconds the temperature was back down at ~90*C, as soon as I started moving it went straight back up. (The radiator fan hasn't once come on... but that was iffy before the service, and I've been meaning to sort the perished wiring on it for ages, so I don't really trust it.)

I've opened the bleed valve... no air, just coolant came out. The coolant level was a bit down, but I'd expect this after trapped air from the flush has worked it's way out... topped it up and will keep an eye on it.

The only thing I can thing think is that the water pump has failed, but is there any way I can check this???

All advice gratefully received! James

Oh dear. Tale of woe expected tomorrow at work.

Hot feeds back to expansion tank? (quick way to check for circulation).

Maybe crap filtered through the system causing blockage - maybe needs flushing again. Gimme a call if you're taking back to garage and need a lift!

It turned out to be a dodgy thermostat.... which ended up being costly as on Corsa's the thermostat is behind the cam belt :(

All fixed now though.
