Decipher MOT tyres miles left

New tyre tread depth 7mm Now 2mm Legal limit 1.6mm Wear = 5mm Remaining tread = 2 - 1.6 = 0.4mm

Remaining life = 0.4 x 9125 / 5 = 730 miles. So total miles will be 9855.

But as others have pointed out it hasn't been "safe" for some time. For wet weather 3mm is considered about the limit.

How do you manage to get by with no basic maths skills?

I'm surprised that no one has asked about the wear pattern.

If it's fairly even across the whole width of both tyres, it's just wear. If it's significantly worn more on the edges, it's either an alignment problem, or the tyres have been run for a long period with incorrect tyre pressures. How often do you check the pressures, and what gauge do you use?

FWIW, Continentals on the front of my Focus only last about 10k miles, although the grip is great. I change them once below 3mm, and certainly before 2mm, as the wet grip drops significantly then.

Most people in Britain have no basic maths skills - and we're .... light bulb moment!

I couldn't tell you what 5X9 is but I get by fine using formulae and a calculator.

I used to use Pirelli P6000, lasted about 12K miles.

I have switched to Firestone TZ300. I now get 24K miles. But they have removed all the fun from having a RWD car, I can't power slide them. All the places on daily run that would have me winding on opposite lock they don't let go. zzzzzzz.

I was driving around a grassy field used for parking at a village fete. On my way out I thought it would be a good time for some sideways fun.

Big dollop of throttle, f*ck all happens. Only went and forgot about the fecking ASC and traction control!

ah yes, the fun you could have with an rs turbo with fwd lsd when you got it wrong, they have taken the excitement out of driving. I used to really enjoy getting 2.8 capris come in for work, purely for the sideways test drive after.

Oh, no. How terrible to have tyres with some grip instead of the notoriously shit P6000 ditchfinders.

They seem to have stopped making them in my size. They were OEM fitment. Ford Focus also came with P6000 in that size with certain alloy wheels.

Oh, dear. What a tragedy.

Doesn't mean they aren't utterly shit.
