Does anyone know..............

What car uses an external high pressure fuel pump for feeding the petrol injection system? I`m in the middle of a project engine that has a fuel injection set-up but has an internally placed fuel pump, making it unsuitable for use in a converted tank. A small light pump is what I`m ideally looking for. Are there any aftermarket pumps out there that might suit my application?

Gordon ( snipped-for-privacy@mrplumber.freeserve.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying :

Plenty.

Most older (80s) injected stuff used external pumps rather than in-tank.

I'd *suspect* it's almost as easy as "Was there a carb and an injected version of the car available?" - cheaper and easier to make just one tank for both, and in-tank pumps are bigger than the hole needed for just a sender.

Any half-intelligent scrappy or motor factor should be able to help.

unlikely to be cheap, but demon-tweeks.co.uk will probably have what you need

A 2litre carlton of about 1990 age had an external pump on most fuel injected models although a few were internal. it sits in a rubber doughnut between the tank and the rear axle and is easily removed as the plate it sits on is mounted using rubber cotton reel the mounts which will most prbably have perished an fell apart.

Granada, Sierra and Escort/Orion with EFi systems all had an external pump mounted next to the fuel tank - should be the case for most 80's injected cars.

Injected Cavaliers came in 2 versions - one internal, one external.

Rover SDI Vitesse/EFI for one(two) ;-) Jaguars of about the same age. There was a pump for one of these on Ebay recently - do a search for SD1. It's a Bosch pump. That Lucas system runs at around 36 psi - some more recent systems may be higher.

In news:cu8fgh$3hf$ snipped-for-privacy@newsg4.svr.pol.co.uk, Gordon decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

2.8i Capri. The pump on those was a bit industrial...

It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Gordon" saying something like:

Burton have external HP fuel pumps in their catalogue. Not particularly cheap, though.

Range Rovers have an external pump. (1989 V8's do anyway). Should be easy enough to get one from a breakers.
