Engine bay squeal when cold

As topic,

For the first 2 mins or so of driving/running, when the revs go over approx

2500rpm a high-pitched squeal is heard which increases in pitch and volume with engine speed. After a couple of minutes it disappears and doesn't happen again until the following morning or after being left for 8 or so hours.

Car's a 1993 Mondeo 1.8. I can't locate it any more specifically than the side of the engine bay with the alternator, water pump, power steering pump etc, I'm guessing it's one of these but not sure how to determine which. I'm almost certain it's *not* the auxilary belt slipping, it's a very different sound, more 'mechanical' if that makes sense, like bearings? But why does it disappear when the engine's warm? That makes me think it's more likely oil or water pump?

Any suggestions?

WiW.

Almost certainly the serpentine belt slipping. Very common at startup on the Zetec engine especially when it's a bit cold and damp. You'd better retension it before it wears itself and possibly all the pulleys out.
