Engine stalls on idle, by only when warm

My Nissan Sunny with a fuel injected A series engine (apparently based on the Austin A series) stalls on idle at road junctions and sometimes when changing gear but only when warm. It does not overheat. So it seems that it only runs OK when the automatic choke is on. The car has been serviced, new plugs filters etc, it does not have a catalytic converter so it can't relate to that. It has been suggested it might be the idle control valve. What sort of money is this likely to cost to repair or replace and could this be a DIY job? Thanks in advance.

The symptoms would point to an air leak.

Where are you? It seems from the wiki that A14E and A15E were Asian market engines.

First thing to do, is locate it. It will be on the inlet manifold or part of the throttle body. If it's anything like most other Nissan EFi, simple test is unplug it, the revs should drop. Plug it back in the revs should surge to about 1500rpm and then fall back to idle. If the revs don't fall and rise, strip it and clean it with carb cleaner. They are a spring loaded plunger and tend to get choked with coke. If it stalls when unplugged find the base idle screw (often looks like a 10mm bolt on Nissan) and increase the base idle.

Do not adjust the throttle to mask the fault, that will upset the idle switch setting. Check that the throttle shuts fully and is clean.
