Escort 1.6 16v - Erratic Engine

Hello,

My S-Reg Escort has recently been acting strange. When stopped at traffic lights the engine will rise then fall, close to stalling, then rise again, then fall. If I dont appy any acceleration and if its left alone, it will eventually stall. But it does not happen all of the time, and only when the car has been running warm. A friend suggested the automatic choke might be faulty but this has been checked ok.

Can anyone suggest any possible causes, before I take it back to the dealership :-(

Many Thanks for any advice

Regards Mark

If it's got a choke then removing it would be a good opening move.

I'd have thought that the 1.6 16v wouldn't have a choke, because it should be fuel injected.

This is probably the idle control valve bunged up.

Search on Google Groups for "Ford Idle Control Valve" or something like that. Apparently it's black, plastic, and when clean, should rattle when you shake it.

Had a similare thing recenly with one. I changed the spark plugs for proper main dealer motorcraft platinum plugs (£20 for a set!!!) and problem was illiminated. The plugs on this one however were visibly well worn (platinum plugs are meant to last 30k miles hence the price!) If they look OK, try taking of the Idle Control Valve (Plug in round device attached to the top of the inlet manifold) cleaning out with some carb cleaner and then get a new gasket and refit it. Also check all your vacuum hoses for leaks....I don't think it will be anything beyond any of these things as they are a pretty good engine if looked after.

You are thinking of the oil breather flame trap, which is a service item. Found on the top of the oil separator chamber, which is on the front of the

1.8 engine, probably on the 1.6 too. I have also found the separator chamber completely blocked on one car, so it wouldn't matter what that valve/flame trap was like!
