Escort service - oil question

I just had my 1998 Ford Escort 1.6 Zetec serviced and a new exhaust fitted - front, middle and rear sections needed replacing. The car has done 85,000 miles.

The whole thing, including a new CV boot on the passenger front, oil change, labour and VAT came to =A3271.66. Does that sound reasonable? Labour was =A380.

One thing I've noticed - the oil that they mention on the invoice is

10w40 semi-synthetic. I have always used 5w30 in this engine previously as I understood that Zetecs could be fussy in this department. Will the 10w40 be an acceptable replacement, bearing in mind that I have never had any problems with sticking valves or the like?

Any opinions gratefully received.

Doesn't sound too bad.

*IMO* I would query that oil. If it's always had 5/30, and you use 10/40=20 all of a sudden, that *may* put strain on oil seals and cause valves to=20 stick.

Pete.

Price is OK, oil is incorrect. Ask the garage to show you how they arrived at the decision to use a cheap oil. Ford zetec engines are fussy and you might notice it starts sounding like a bag of spanners at start-up for a while. When it is warm it will be better. I would get them to show you Ford recommended it, or have them do a complete oil change and filter change. Another thing to check is the level of oil. Some garages used to throw the whole 5litre container in meaning in more modern cars there was too much oil. For what reason was an oil change carried out for a new exhaust fitting and did the CV boot need changing? I suspect you took it to a faster fitting type parts replacement company rather than a garage. I'm amazed they didn't sell you shock absorbers or brakes!

Thanks for the reply. No, it was a local garage that I have used before. The car went in for a standard service and I asked them to check the exhaust as it was starting to blow - but I wasn't quite prepared for having to replace the whole thing. I don't think that they were telling porkies, though.

I don't have good luck with exhausts in general. I had a Skoda Felicia for many years - bought from a non-Skoda dealer - and I asked them to replace the original exhaust when I bought it because it was on its last legs. They ordered the wrong exhaust (for a 1.6 engine, mine was the 1.3) and, instead of getting the right one, sawed the bolt fitting off the catalytic coverter to fit the rear section. This of course never mated properly again and, despite jumping through hoops with various motor trade associations and so on, eventually gave up and had to replace the whole thing again at my own expense.

Anyway, thanks for the answers.
