Escort White Vapour

R Reg 1.8 SI Escort 64K, always seems to be running on choke. I know it doesn't have one but whenever I accelerate the fuel vapour is visible from the exhaust even when the engine is hot. When my wife is driving I can spot our Escort, that's the one with the vapour from the exhaust. The engine seems to lack clean power i.e. the acceleration hesitates up to high revs, also when changing up the engine revs do not drop quickly enough to change gear smoothly. I use Zeetec grade quality oil and the car doesn't burn it. Anybody got any ideas or should I take it to a tune-up specialist so they can charge the earth to adjust or clean something!

White vapour from exhaust would usually indicate a cold damp morning which isn't a problem,- or a leaking head gasket, which is. DaveK.

Check your coolant and oil levels. Have any gone up/down? Is the temperature normal? Fuel vapour isn't visible and coupled with the performance issue what you may be seeing is water due to a cylinder head gasket leak. Caught early enough, normally it shouldn't cause too much damage but shouldn't be ignored!

good luck,
