Exhaust repair - is this a DIY job?

Hi all, my Transit van needs the middle part of the exhaust replacing.

Should I just take it to Quik Fit etc.., a local garage or is it worth doing this yourself - if the later where's a good place to get the bits from?

Cheers PJ

Phone around and compare prices - you often don't save much on exhausts by D'ing IY. Forget National Tyres, they've got really expensive lately.

I would go to a small local exhaust specialist rather than a chain any day. They are more likely to replace only the parts that need replacing than a national (no names mentioned).

Replacing an exhaust is simple for everything is on view PROVIDED the nuts and bolts can be taken off! It is almost always that some are so stuck that you have no choice but to resort to cutting (or drilling) bits off (yes, more than one) and you spend hours lying on your back holding up heavy tools you are not used to using. If you insist of doing it yourself, I'd advise first loosening every fastener you can find on the exhaust (or the segment you want to take off), and tighten them up again. Until you are confident all can be taken off without much effort, don't bother to put in an order for the new part.

Checking up on National Tyres and Autocare, I noticed the special promotional offer of 50% off on exhausts. It's to finish on 24th March. Maybe it's worth investigating further!

That might make them more competitive then, but the prices I've been quoted recently needed to be half price anyway.

Years ago I got a complete system for my Maestro, spent 2 to 3 hours removing and refitting. Drove past one of those Kwik Fit places whilst doing a road test, and found they were doing a special on the same exhaust, for cheaper than I had bought the system. I've never done one myself since.

I had exactly the same experience about 16 years ago. Since then the only time I've ever fitted an exhaust bit myself was when I was really broke and I got a s/h but in very good nick rear box for a Micra for about £15 or so.

I did my transit only a couple of months ago. I did the mid section and rear section all for about 60 pounds for the parts and delivery.
