Experience with diagnostic scanners - CAN-bus compatible

I'm interested in buying a CAN compatible diagnostic scanner to work with my 2005 Prius.

I've found 3 places selling low-cost scanners which claim to be CAN- compatible:

PalmOS software only, list $289, about $200 on eBay, +$20-30 for aPalm cable

- software looks good, but no information to write own applications

PalmOS and Windows software, list $140 for Windows, $195 for both(including Palm cable)- software looks slightly less polished, but programmers guide tointerface is available

- Windows software, list $240

- software looks good, but no information to write own applications (at least, not that i could see on the website)

On the face of it the dharrison product tooks to be both cheaper and more interesting for experimenters, since the programmers guide explains how to access the interface with your own software, which neither of the others seem prepared to do.

Does anyone have any experience with any of these? Any reason to prefer one rather than another?

You better be careful that you have the right unit. You are quoting units for the US market, which is OBDII, Europe is EOBD. AFAIK CAN is CAN but check it out before you buy.
