Faulty petrol gauge

I inherited a 1992 Mercedes 300SE but find that the petrol gauge is faulty. It shows half-full even when the tank is full and then suddenly drops down to zero and then back up to half. Can someone with the relevant experience tell me what is involved in fixing it and what is it likely to cost if I put it into a garage.

This is an essential accessory on such a thirsty car!!!

Most likely is the sender unit in the tank. Although all connections should be checked.

I dunno your model. On some it is very easy to change. Others not. ;-)

Why? Doesn't the trip mileage indicator work either? Just zero it every time you fill up, then refill before you get to 250 miles or whatever. It becomes second nature after a while...

My last astra had this feature; I used to put 25 pounds worth of fuel in and refill every 320 miles.

I realise now I should have gone by litres rather pounds, as when Mr. Brown bumped the price up some he stranded me on the M6 for several hours ;)

You must have a psychic gift!!

As a matter of fact the odometer and trip meter don't work but I'd bought the vehicle before I'd discovered the 24k shown on the meter was not accurate.

Private sale -- no remedy.

Not surprising for a '92 vehicle. Under 2k a year is rather rare.
