Few Questions ( not an all saints song)

  1. Oil, my mate is soo called a mechanic, i however am not! ( perhaps i should say his dad is a mechanic and he works for him) right i took my car for an oil and filter change... simple enough, first the engine was hot, nto much i could do about that sorry, but then we drained the oil, fair nuff, but i assume as the engine had been running a few mins ago the would be quit a bit around the engine, then changed the filter and put the oil back in...

so far so good yea?

right then he started the engine for about 10 secs and read the dipstick, hmmnd and then filled the oil to the max mark, while i watched open mouthed.....

then i went home, allowed the engine to cool and dropped about a litre of oil out, to bring the oil to the max line?

was i correct or was he correct?

i think i shall insist his dad does my oil and filter next time or go even to kwick shit, or do it myself, but when its free you cant complain...or can you!

  1. Oil Viscosity...... The above car a corsa 1.7 D ( izuzu engine) as all well used diesels do is gettin a little noisy... as i dont really want to go to trouble of messing with the tappets, i was thinking of using a thicker oil, (at the expense of RPM) but when i stand and look at the differnt kind of oils i dont know which is thickest/ how oils are rated?

  1. Im looking at buying a 1.7TDI or 2.0TDI Astra new shape..... any comments?

Don't think oil expands by this much...

No, no, no - that's a /good/ thing. Means it runs out nice and quickly and leaves less sticky old oil behind than if it was cold.

The hotter the oil, the quicker it'll drain back into the sump. By the time you've faffed about getting the drain plug out, let it run and got the filter off, almost all of the oil that makes it back to the sump will be there. Whatever's left over isn't worth worrying too much about as it'll be diluted by the new stuff.

You are correct. Having the oil level too high can cause leaks, and in a diesel, the oil can find its way into the combustion chamber and burn there. This leads to 'run-away' and the engine will sit there revving flat-out until it goes pop or the oil level drops. Usually the former happens first.

The Isuzu engines are quite critical to tappet adjustment. Incorrect clearances can lead to poor starting. Get them checked (doesn't take that long), and use the correct oil.! ;-)

I have recently upgraded to a 2003 2.0 DTI Astra. Very nice it is too. Pulls very well in 2nd/3rd. 58mpg on a run. Comfy (Air con is fantastic). And very little oil usage. Some owners report high oil consumption on these engines. I have done 2000 miles now, and the level has dropped about 2-3mm on the dipstick - nothing to worry about there, I think!

I had a 2.0Di Astra (S reg - one of the first) which used a daft amount of oil between services (upto 5 litres) upto the 40,000 mark, at which point it decided to use not a drop more. Three of our works vans, all 2.0Di ones were exactly the same; lousy oil consumption upto the 40k, then fine. According to Vauxhall, this was about right!

Although it was the non-intercooled 80Ps version, it was a cracking drive, very smooth with no thump when the boost come in (unlike a 2.0DTi Vectra I tried later). Not a ball of fire, but would give me 50mpg thrashed everywhere. I miss that one. S462HOJ where are you? Last seen going back to the Lease company with 108,000 on its 4th birthday, with nothing more than a couple of bulbs and a few sets of tyres in all that time.

Starts on the button hot cold, wet or dry;

still its a bit noisy good old fashioned tappy tappets!, but i have heard worse.... much worse

looking at the "value your car" guide ( i tink its basically an online version of glass's) on vauxhals website, and it valued my car

as a average condition jobbie as £1500 if i was to sell privately what you think would be reasonable ask £2k take £1900?

First car, first car sale! so im open to ideas

The 2.0Di (discontinued aroun 2000/01) was a "low-blow" engine, still with turbo but no intercooler, hence its 80PS vs. 100Ps for the intercooled (DTi) versions. It did have a very small turbo (T15?) though...

I always reckon to let the oil level settle for 20-30 minutes before dipping it but any capable technician will know how much oil is needed before they do the job.

With regards to oil, I don't know how old your car is but Vauxhall have recommended a decent quality semi synthetic 10w40 for quite a while now.

It sounds as if the tappets need adjusting. It is not difficult but you will need shims.
