Fiat Brava Immobiliser fault?

T reg 16V fiat Brava, was lying for a year, started and MOT'd remarkably easily! ran perfectly for a week and now won't start, the fault code comes up as immobiliser key? it has both master and a spare key. The thing I noticed, when you put the key in the ignition and try and start it (turns over good style) the key/code indicator doesn't light up for it's usual time, I am sure it should flash on for a second then go off again? Same on both keys

Any thoughts? Apart from the usual (worth more as scrap, £100 quid a car and they come and pick up) he hasn't got a lot of luck with cars at the moment has a petrol freelander.......

the code lamp should come on briefly. remaining lit is a problem. the immobiliser can be disabled in some markets using the 5 digit code supplied with the car

Fiat were stopped from providing a card with UK cars by the insurance industry.

I'm assuming you've got the red master and blue everyday key? - and also that you normally use the blue key?

There was an article in one of the grease monkey type magazines last year that dealt with CODE problems - there's a bloke who can now de-code and re-code them for very little money so long as you send him the CODE unit and the keys.

Yes we have tried both blue and red key , we even have the envelope which at one time had the code in it, unfortunately no longer

The problem seems to be the code unit as the key/code light doesn't come on at all, or is there a fuse somewhere? Where is the code unit?

Can't remember where the CODE unit is - and the code you had in an envelope may well have been a radio code, too.... unless a previous owner had requested a code at some point.

It won't be a fuse - it'll either be a knackered CODE unit (it does happen, sometimes), or possibly the transponder ring around the ignition barrel that's at fault.

My Money's strongly on the ECU or Code unit, as the latter derives power and instructions from the other. If the receiver coil was at fault, the light would be on, and flashing wildly when you attempt to start signalling 'no code received'
