Fiesta dampers going?

Fiesta has started making an odd bumping noise at the back when going over bumps. I know that sounds redundant, but previously it was quiet. Now it sounds like someone kicking the tyres. I'm thinking it has to be the dampers, because there's hardly anything else back there. Trouble is, if you do the bouncing it up and down test, it seems okay (i.e. it doesn't). Does this mean they're just starting to pack in? Or could it be something else?

exhaust would be worth checking.

My money's on anti-roll bar bushes or drop links.

As it happens, the exhaust system has just been replaced. It made the noise before the replacement, and still makes it after. It did just occur to me to make sure the spare wheel is still secure.

Is there a way to check these? I'm pretty sure the noise is from the back, but you never know.

Has it actually _got_ a rear anti roll bar?

Aaaaahhhh..... Depends on the setup. I'm so used to cars with independent rear suspension (and therefore ARB kit on the back) I'd forgotten that it might be a single trailing axle job.

But, however, find any bits held together with rubber bushes and ball joints, take the strain off them (jack it up) and see if there's any play.

No. Next to nothing at the back end, so there's not much to choose from.

I didn't know the actual name for it, but single trailing axle describes it nicely. Come to think of it, it did start to make a strange noise when going round small roundabouts recently. Like a little honking noise. That has stopped now, maybe the bumping noise has replaced it as it got worse?

Spare wheel in the boot isn't clamped down?

I have a knocking noise in the boot, how can I stop it?:

Yes, I realised that I ought to check that before getting too carried away.

If the back seat folds forward to extend the boot space make sure that it fully seated back into the locking mechanism

You're not the only one... Took me a while to figure the rattly-clonk from the back of the 205 was simply the heavily-neglected spare gone soft, thereby loosening the clamping force of the cradle against the boot floor... A minute with the compressor solved the noise.
