And you bought it in that condition?

Anyway...

ISTR you said you turned it over for 20-30 *minutes* each time? You'll need a new starter and battery soon too if that's the case.

You shouldn't touch the accelerator *at all* when starting.

Try it.

i only hold the accelerator down when it dont start. and the problem started a few days after i got it. and yes the starter motor is having a hard time every week or so. when i get in it i turn the key until the lights come on othe dash. then i push accelerator pedal to the floor and the release it. then i start the car. if it dont start i then pump the pedal a few times and then if it want go then it gets put to the floor until the batt runs flat or it starts

No, try not touching the accelerator *at all* before or during starting. Why do you push the accelerator to the floor once before starting it? Does it say to do that in the handbook?

What happens if you don't touch the pedal at all whilst trying to start it?

Any UK car registered after 1992 (L reg and onwards) will not have an auto choke. They are all fuel injected - they have to be to be able to pass the modern emissions test. Touching the accelerator will not help when trying to start a fuel injected car.

Its fuel injection- there is NO 'choke'.

In some older cars with mechanical auto-chokes that was how you turned it /off/.

And in other older cars it was how you turned it /on/, (none of which is relevant to the OP of course).

How old is this Fester? Anybody got the official line on cold starts/warm starts/flooded starts?

And is it the same for my 96 Mondeo?

94/95. I'm of the opinion that all injected engines can manage the cold start business all on their own and should be left to do what they want when they're being started. As for flooding, which shouldn't happen anyway, I believe the accepted way to get rid is foot to the floor whilst cranking.

More than likely.

If the driver could faff about with the mixture at will it could really bugger up the catalyst.

1992 is J-K, I believe

ISTR there were one or two cars that managed to fudge a solution with carb. and cat. to meet the emissions standards. Didn't Austin Rover do it with the Maestro / Montego?

L-reg started Aug '93, so is clearly *after* 1992 :-)
