Focus 2.0 TDCi hot start issues

I've got a Focus 2.0 TDCi (Pug engine) that's five years old now. In the past week or so, its not been starting well when the engine is warm. It turns over, fires for a second or two , not really reaching idle speed and dies. It usually starts fine second attempt.

It starts fine first time when the engine is stone cold. Any ideas?

What sort of issue would the ECU update address and why would the problem suddenly appear after 5 years?

I believe it is something to do with ageing injectors, but don't take that as gospel. If it were mine then I would first be looking at any possible air leaks into the diesel system, especially return pipes . I have heard of people having an ecu update which has resolved the same fault description, I have not had one in myself with the fault. I have also heard of a similar problem being caused by one injector being faulty which apparently costs several hundred quid.

Thanks for that. Oddly enough it had six new injectors replaced under warranty a couple of years ago.

It had four injectors replaced to cure a starting problem that turned out to be the butterfly in the throttle body sticking closed. Unfortunately, two of the new injectors were faulty (bad knocking) and had to be replaced. Good job I wasn't paying for it. The Ford tech at the dealers had suspected the throttle body all along because he had known them to stick before but Ford's tech service people told him to change the injectors.

I am so glad I don't own anything modern and troublesome.
