focus t'stat housing leak

I've been losing coolant and have found the leak its on the thermostat housing a minor leak but I'm having to top up every week which will no doubt get worse. This part is a bit pricey for a glorified bit of plastic. I'm contemplating a my last bodge of the year before my new years resolutions kick in .. no more bodges.

My using some gasket sealer on both surfaces to create a better seal ?

Do you think this will work or should I get a new part, cost is an issue but I guess I could try an online breaker or ebay ?

Providing the set-up is similar to the 2000 model where they usually leak just from the "O" ring where the housing face meets the cylinder head, you can buy these separately for a couple of quid. You may not have to buy a complete housing although Fords will recommend you do, I fitted a new "O" ring to my 2000 Focus early on this year and it has been fine since.

is it possible to do the old trick and make a gasket from the side of a cornflakes box and a ball-pein hammer?
