Focus ticking noise

04 ford focus petrol

I've noticed when cold and the bonet up there is a ticking sound coming from around the timing belt area. When warmed up its not as noticable.

Out of interest what might this be ? anything to be worried about ?

Its often a noisy injector which quietens down when warmed up.

it would have to be heard. anything in the cambelt train is a real urgent problem, while a tappet or injector is less urgent.

I've had another listen this morning whilst it was cold. I put my hand on the cambelt cover in case the belt was knocking that but nothing. On sticking my ear closer the noise is actually coming from something around the auxiliary belt. Could be the tensioner which seems a common fault from googling. The noise disappears under 1 minute and can't be heard again till its cold. Also I noticed a fairly loud ticking from the injector rails. Is this normal or bad ?

so take off the aux belt and see if the noise stops. injector clicking is absolutely normal

..searching through the haynes on how to release its tension. Space is very cramped aswell. I think you have to get at it thought the wheel liner.

Don't allow the spanner to slip off when you are releasing the tensioner; it's easy for the pulley to become damaged if you do, and the tensioner assembly is not cheap.

Note that in spite of what Mr Haynes thinks, on order to replace the tensioner (on a 1.8/2.0 at least) you need to remove the top engine mount, jack the engine up, and lever it over in order to get one of the bolts out. It fouls on the strut tower otherwise.

which engine? IIRC the 1.6 is quite easy to do from under the bonnet, the

1.8 is a bit harder.

Its the 1.8.

I did as Chris said and removed the engine mount and supported the engine with a block of wood and a jack. Once I finally got at it I discovered it was cracked :( .. Popped in to ford and they had them in stock luckily and have just finished putting it all back together about 15 minutes ago. Job done. Seems over aggravating for what it is. Also put a new aux belt on. Its taken about 2 and half hours taking my time and getting it right and getting it all done up right.

And that ticking, clicky clacking sound has gone. :)

Hi Chris,

It was a whooping £160.93 with VAT. The parts guy said they had one in only because a customer collected the car back before they could do the work as of a family emergency, so it was sitting right there for me :) .. I'm never that lucky lol. I found a used one in a local scrappy but it was very looked in a very poor state and I didn;t fancy trying my luck on how long it would last, it was only £40 aswell. But wth the amount of effort it took to get to for me I decided to opt for the new part.

Thanks for the website link , looks very good. Every little helps.

The reason I asked was because the last one I got two years ago was about £100, and I thought that was a lot...

Sounds like a good call. Probably would have failed eventually. From reading on the user forums at passionford/focus fanatics/ and another one I've forgotten the name it has come up quite a bit the the tensioner fault, seems a common fault.
