Ford Cambelts

The OE cambelt would have Ford logos printed on it. It would still be made by the same factory that made the aftermarket one in all probability but go through a separate printing step. Ford don't make parts themselves nor do any other major car manufacturer.

Do Ford make their own cambelts? And would a new Ford be fitted with one as opposed to another make?

I'm referring to an N-reg Probe, if that makes any difference. I'm trying to work out if the cam-belt needs changing. The current one's not a Ford one, so I'm hoping it's been done. Don't really fancy forking out 250 smackers if it's already been done...

from memory (before everything i worked on went chain driven) ford belts had the ford logo on them in several places is there no record of it having been changed then? and why can't you just whip the cover off and have a look if you can see the belt them you should be able to do the twist test to see if it's cracked or not

V6 or 4 cyl? The 4 cylinder is quite easy to do, the V6 a bit more complicated, but it can easily be done at home. If it is a V6, I wouldnt worry too much if it has gone past its 'service life' - its a non-interference engine, so if the belt does go, it shouldnt cause any engine damage. The teeth start to crack when they wear. For peace of mind, change it! Do a web search for the Ford Probe Owners Club, and ask on the forum there for garage recommendations in your area, or see if anyone will do it for you. Alan.

Most manufacturers don't make most of the bits in their cars...body panels and in some cases, engine castings, yes. Not a lot else. When you've walked round a few, you get to see LOTS of wagons arriving with many different names on them.

It's a V6. I've tried getting the cover off to have a look, but all I can see is the top, not the teeth unfortionately, as it looks like quite a lot of stuff would have to be removed to get the cover off properly. Anyway, it's not badged as "Ford". If it won't do any engine damage if it snaps, I think you've just made my mind up for me. :o)

Thanks for all replies.

I'll try again to get the cover off to see the teeth. There's no record of it being changed, and I don't know if the milage is genuine either, so it's anybody's guess.

By the way, I phoned Ford's to get a quote for changing the belt. The bloke I spoke to quoted 250 quid, but then he went away and came back and told me it doesn't need changing as it's got a chain instead. Funny looking chain...

I think you'll find that Ford is the biggest manufacturer of fuel tank sender units in europe, if not the world. Supplying many other european car makers. They also make much of their own dashboard instrumentation, and also engines, as others have pointed out. Mike.

Most of the Ford/BMW/Jag etc. parts are made at QH in Wales nowerdays.

Speshly water pumps, suspension parts, and many other engine parts (says the man who part buli the machines to do them :) )

Cheers Dan.

The covers do not come off easily. To get them off involves a lot of stripping down, removing drive belts etc.

A better bet would be a Mazda dealer, as the Probe is basically a rebadged Mazda MX6.Many Mazda parts are cheaper than the Ford ones, and the Mazda repairers seem to be a lot more clued up about the Ford Probe than the Ford garages. Alan.
