Ford common rail

Does anyone know the sequence a 1.4 tdci engine primes its fuel system. My mate has just done an engine swap and bled the diesel with the hand primer yet on cranking there is no firing and the common rail does not seem to pressurise.

A code reader shows no fault other than the crank position sensor which has been replaced.

Checking the fuel pressure sensor on the common rail shows an initial surge when cranking starts and then it quickly falls to near zero.

These engines are notoriously difficult to bleed. Dealers/specialists either pre-fill, then use a vacuum pump, or use a rig that pressurises the fuel tank with compressed air.

Don't be tempted to try to tow-start it. It's unlikely to work, and may destroy the pump.

Your mate might have to bite the bullet and tow it to a local specialist in the worst case.

Firstly, when you say engine swap, what exactly has he swapped, and what were the engine codes between the two motors, and what fuel systems are fitted?

There were lots of small but subtle design changes as well as wiring, and ECU changes.

Then I would be looking at cam / crank sync's and what the ECU is seeing as far as rail pressure.

Chris is right in what he says about priming the HP pump also.

They are not a motor I like to work on, just like the 1.6 flavour, but are pretty lucrative!

08 plate engine threw a conrod so was replaced by an 04 one, both look identical with siemens high pressure pump.

Booked in to local Ford dealer on Tuesday as per earlier advice.

I was wanting to know what part of the sequence opened the solenoid to the pump to pressurise the common rail.

I'm fairly confident its a communication or PATS problem.

Engine codes? Four years is a big difference in diesel-tech around then.

I would put £100 on it not being a PATS problem! Having revealed the different yrs of engine i'm not going to give you the silver bullet either!

The PRV is not opened to pressurize the rail, its opened to control rail pressure. Go and read up.

They were same engine code F6B IIRC. Problem was broken wire in one of the connectors at back of engine. Took dealer 3 sessions on IDS @ £92 each to sort it :-(.
