Ford Scorpio Auto gearbox problem

My L reg Scorpio 2.0 has developed a problem with the auto gearbox. It is reluctant to shift into 4th. At 3000 rpm on a flat road with minimal presssure on the throttle it is still in 3rd. Any help would be appreciated.

This can be a sign that the box is on its way out. What happens is the pump, various valves and clutches begin to leak more as they age and for 4th to engage requires ful line pressure which the pump isnt able to give. If you get 4th gear when the box is cold but loose it when it warms up, then this is definately the cause.

Assume the level is correct and the fluid / sump filter is recent??

I'm afraid this is a common problem with Ford boxes, and not cheap to fix. Don't know of any specialists who will simply fix one fault - they tend to do a complete re-con as it's really the only way to go. I'd say you're looking at the thick end of a grand, unless you want to try the DIY route with a secondhand box.

5-Speed ZFs as fitted to BMW also won't engage overdrive until the system is up to temperature. Don't know if the same applies to this model.
