Going by that brief bit info, it must be a turbo'd fly-by-wire engine. Only option is to plug it into a diagnostic machine, and find out what the fault it.

But, has it had a cambelt recently?

He said *CAM*belt but as you've had no work done then the answer would be no anyway. When the engine problem warning light comes on, the engine management goes into 'limp home' mode. This restricts the revs, restricts throttle etc that's why you're losing power.

It may be a sensor failing. It may be a thermostat failing. It could be any one of a dozen things. It could actually be a problem with the engine about to lunch itself. Maybe the oil pump is unhappy. Maybe the water pump. Maybe the Oxygen sensor. Maybe the Turbo is overheating.

The only way to find out is to take it along to a place with a diagnostic computer and plug it into the management port. That'll give the code and tell you what is wrong.

Can you hear the turbo whistling at all?

since it a diesel we seem to be forgetting the basics, it may be something as simple as a blocked fuel filter or an occasional bit of air getting in the system, this can also cause the engine to rev up and down at times,
