Gates cambelts

I've just got a local garage to quote for a cambelt and tensioner replacement on my son's Mk1 Mondeo TD. I requested the quote to include a genuine Ford belt kit because there are certain areas where I prefer to use OEM parts.

The quote came back but for using a Gates belt kit. Garage says that Gates make the OEM belt for Ford, which may or may not be true but of course they would say that anyway :)

I know that Gates are probably the biggest name in drive belts but that doesn't mean anything. Champion are the biggest name in spark plugs and they chuck out some crap (I don't want to start that old debate up again though). What are everyone's opinions on Gates cambelts? Are they likely to be as good as the Motorcraft item?

I am certain that gates are a well respected name and very reliable, but why not just get a ford branded kit, if that is what you want ? (I would specify genuine, original makers kit in every case if available)

My volvo just had its 90k service - all the belts. Done at an independant but all the parts were volvo boxed originals (and it even shows on my history at the volvo dealer as they were bought against the car...) saved me over 230 quid on the dealers price. Even the parts were cheaper!

Gates are top drawer, even better than some OEM's suppliers in some cases, I would have no issues using a Gates kit as opposed to a Motorcraft one.

Gates is the OEM for VAG and Vx.
