Gear whine on new 1.25 Fiesta

Hi,

My wife has recently taken on a 1.25 Fiesta as a lease car, which has so far covered about 3500 miles. Since brand new the gearbox has whined, with the pitch of the whine varying according to engine speed (and not road speed). Well, last week her car was in for bodywork repairs (don't ask - apparently it was all Fords fault for not automatically applying the handbrake for her on a slope...), and the gearbox on the loan car was totally silent, despite having almost the same mileage.

Has anyone else come across this issue? I'll get her to take the car in and get it checked, but I can't help thinking that they will just fob her off as it hasn't actually broken (yet). The sound disappears when the clutch is disengaged, and given the engine speed link, I'm guessing that the issue might be bearing related on the input shaft? Anyhow, I'd be interested if anyone else has come across a similar problem with this gearbox.

Andy.
